Create a GPX file instead, either by hand or using an online tool. GPX's can have more data, including 'alerts'. GPX's can be created with Notepad or online tools such as:

I've used that to load custom POI files a few...

I've used that to load custom POI files a few times. The POIs will show up in searches so you can navigate to them, but so far I 'm not able to make them automatically show up on the map and/or alert...
