DEF was not introduced in Sprinters until 2010, so there were a few glorious years of NCV3s that were not plagued with the BlueTec system. This was arguably the golden age of Sprinters.

Just to be 100% accurate, mb was neverrequired to use DEF. It was just the choice they made for meeting the new diesel emissions standards. VW chose differently. We know how that turned out.

Yes, but don't confuse Sprinter model year with RoadTrek model year. It is quite possible OP's chassis is MY2009 as I said, which is non-DEF.
