A new Class B buyer asked whether a 2011 Roadtrek 190 Popular on a Chevy 3500 chassis with 89,000 miles was worth pursuing at a $33,000 private-sale asking price, possibly with an offer slightly below that and contingent on inspection. Members generally felt the price sounded very good, possibly below market by several thousand dollars, but cautioned that unusually attractive listings can be scams and advised not sending any deposit unless the seller and van are verified.

Hi folks, new to this forum and new to class B RVs. I'm looking to possibly purchase a 2011 Roadtrek 190 Popular (Chevy 3500 platform) with 89K miles on it from a private seller. Asking price is $33K. I've seen so much diversity in asking prices for similar Roadtrek 190 Popular in age and mileage that I'm not sure if this is worth pursuing. The ad I responded to included few pics, but I asked the owner to send me more interior pics (they did) and it seems to be a well cared for, clean and solid camper van. I haven't seen it in person yet (live in another state) but am considering making an offer slightly below this asking price. Not sure if this asking price is already at true market value for this model/year/mileage (only mod is adding a lift kit apparently).

I've been reading other threads regarding what to look for when the time comes. I plan on setting an appt for an inspection in the town where the van is if my offer is accepted and hope that I've accumulated a good list of point to look at during an inspection. However, I need to make an online offer first, contingent upon this inspection outcome, so I need to be successful in making a strategically viable offer.

Any advice on how you all see the valuation of this class B camper van. I'd hate to lose the opportunity to purchase it if it's close to market value already and the sellers ignore my offer. Thanks.

I'm going to say that that price is what i would consider below market value by probably $5k minimum, unless something is wrong with it. Since its below market value, it could be a scam and whatever you do, do not send a down payment unless you are 100% certain its legit! The scammers listing things with the intent that people feel inclined to want to send a down payment to hold it because its a great deal, only to never see the money or van.

I've seen 50+ scam listings on Craigslist in the last year. Lots of listings use the same images over and over, just in a different part of the US. If the VIN number is listed, you have a higher chance that its a legit listing, but still no guarantee.

This list likely isn't complete, but a few items to look at when looking to buy a used class B camper.

Check out the age of the tires on the vehicle and look for worn front tires. Personally, I wouldn't use tires that are older than 5 years old on a Chevy Express class B because these vans are almost maxed out on axle weights, especially the rear, and worn front tires may indicate front end components needing replacement.

Check the transmission fluid color for dark fluid and smell the fluid for any burned smell.

Check for any water stains on the fabric of the walls and ceilings inside for signs of water damage. These rigs sometimes leak where marker lights or seams are located, and if you park with the front end lower than the rear, water may leak into the back of the van from the AC area.

I would check to make sure that the refrigerator functions properly and gets nice and cold and functions on propane, 12V and 120V (if equipped with a 3-way).

Check that the under vehicle generator (if equipped) starts and operates as it should. Does the generator have the capacity to start and run the AC system when not connected to shore power?

Plug into shore power and verify that all the outlets work and power to the receptacles work and the fridge transfers from 12V or propane to 120V (if 3-way). After purchasing our 08C210P Roadtrek last spring, I found that the inverter only generates 104V when the inverter is turned on (not connected to shore power) and at 104V, it may not operate some systems (microwave, TV, coffee maker) or pull higher amperage and trip breakers in the process.

If you can, pressurize the water system and make sure the the pump holds water pressure in the lines, the pump stops and no leaks and the tanks don't leak. This may be more crucial in cold climates especially if buying a vehicle in the spring where there may be a crack in piping that an owner isn't disclosing.

Check the microwave, TV and sound systems for proper function.

This may be hard to do, but see if you can run the macerator pump pumps liquid. You can always quickly press the button to verify that the motor runs.

I have seen a couple recently which seem to have very fair prices, there were a couple to compare, but just this one is still listed

my 2011 210 versatile blue book was $52K when I bought it in Sept with 66K miles from an RV dealership and that's also what insurance estimated as the value, so i'd say that price is a very good deal if legit, these vans sold for about $100k in 2011, which is like $150k according to inflation. my loan is 15 years and my interest is deductible because it's considered an ADU

Great, thanks for that insight. I've learned a lot this week regarding good market prices for Roadtrek used vans and things to consider in pricing them.

Hope that van is still available now, since it's no longer on RV Trader.

Thanks OTR. I'm not a Facebook subscriber (probably the only person on the planet who isn't...) so I can't access this link. Can you let me know anything about this one (location, year, price, etc.) so I can search other sites and see if it's on any of them? Thx again.

Don't have FB but the link worked to look. Copied text shown:
