A member asked whether others disliked AI summaries of RV forum topics and why. Several members shared concerns that summaries can lose nuance, overlook useful details, and flatten divergent opinions, with lithium battery discussions cited as an example where important context may be missed. Two members said they generally skip the summaries.

Other members saw potential value in helping newcomers or visitors arriving through searches quickly assess a topic before reading further. One...

I literally bypass the AI thread summary that shows up. Haven't read a one of them, but I'm also a member of this site who's regularily visiting.. However, someone arriving at the thread from an online search could possibly benefit a lot from the summary.

A lot of the topics on the forum bring out very divergent opinions and ideas and an "average" or "summary" of them can squeeze it all into the middle of the road, I think. Many times the very best information are tidbits of ideas, research, or questions, often not addressed in summaries, that fill in the subtle blanks concerning many of the topics. Lithium batteries and the their use is a prime example of this and I don't think summaries can do that topic adequately most of the time. It is kind of like the "executive" summary you see in medical studies or that those of us in the engineering end of businesses had to write for most of our project or budget reports that we commonly, with us, called the "dumbed down" version of the information.

I always described those kinds of summaries as "Bubba Sheets" back when I was working in finance. You got stuff down to a level where Bubba could understand it. Same thing booster called "dumbed down". Bubba was originally a Southern nickname for a kid brother. So, we got things down to a lower intellectual level of understanding.

The problem with AI in my view is exactly what booster mentioned. It is basically a combination that tends to sift to the mean of the thoughts in the posts and therefore misses all the nuances.

you guys both summed up what i think as well. i will add that in my opinion ai can be a good thing when it is not promoting laziness.

I do not care for it at all. Anyone else feel this way? If so, inquiring minds want to know why. ;)

The ai summary is a good help for search. It also allows folks to quickly gather the highlights of a topic and decide to dig in further (or not).

Don't know, read a couple in the beginning and now ignore them. If it were a paid service I would not pay for it! Might be helpful for a new person?

I do generally agree with this related to first past searching for information, as it works similarly to Google search AI results in Google searches. One thing that Google does in their summaries is list the sources of the information used to summarize the topic, and on the really long forum threads perhaps showing the post numbers of source information used to summarize might be and aid to those looking for specific information. We have had threads of over 10 pages long fairly often and is would daunting to try to find the posts that the AI was referring to.
