Humorous after the fact

We head out of Phoenix with a goal of camping in the White Mountains. At c.9000ft it’s much cooler than down in the Valley. After going through Payson we head on the 260 up the climb to the rim. About 2/3 up we experience a very loud bang from driver’s rear of RV. I think tire. But handling remains ok with no shimmy. About at the top of the climb, another bang. So I get off at the visitor center at the top of the rim. All tires ok. I check airbags. Still at the departure PSI. Engine compartment looks good. Nothing dripping under the RV. Engine temp good. So we continue. It’s about another 3 hours to destination and driving is smooth. No issues. But getting up into the White Mountains there’s another bang. Wife googling backfire now. Not much I can do about most the causes but I decide to check the air cleaner when we get to campground and engine cools. After setting up camp I decide it’s time for beer, chips and salsa. Discover that all 3 of our bags of chips have exploded. Five hour drive home uneventful.

That is hilarious. We've had some come so close that now I routinely stick a needle in them.

Yep that can happen. I almost got a broken nose on a plane flight when I had a bag of chips in my hardside briefcase. Flipped the releases and it popped open and slammed me right in the face because the bag was so blown up in size. Amazingly it didn't pop though at 30K feet but probably pressurized to lower than that.

Try that in a private airplane over unlandable terrain. You won’t be able to use the bathroom for a week! Many of us have been there.

In Santa Fe, it is often difficult to find a Pringles can with its plastic cap. The foil seal below it balloons out and the caps pop off in transit.

We use the same technique as MsNomer. We stick a pin in the sack before we leave home (1052 feet elevation) and the tater chips et al are fine at 10,000 feet. I gotta say that boom would have been really scary. We blew up a few bags before the ole needle trick.

On this present trip, several bags went from 930 feet to 14,130 feet.
