The in-dash radio in my '97 GMC is AM, FM and cassette.

This $18 little 4GB MP3 player when coupled to my FM transmitter will extend the stereo's usefulness.

The sound is ok, not great, but like radio I guess. It'll do for now.

I have a cassette adapter that I tried but the sound comes out of either the right or left speakers only depending on which side of the adapter is facing up when inserted. Is that something I can fix or is it junk?

If your cassette player plays fine with regular cassette tapes, then the adapter is likely defective/ broken. It could be a misaligned head (not precisely aligning with the cassette head), loose wiring etc.
I've been using a cassette adapter for years on my older car, and it has worked great. I used to have an FM transmitter, aside from regular interference which degrades sound quality....during travel , some strong stations well interfere with the tuned frequency forcing you to change frequency.

I use the cassette adaptor in my Class B for the satellite radio. Great sound quality. :supz:

I used a cassette adapter with my iPod for several years. Eventually it developed "quirks" similar to Marco's and also liked to eject itself for no reason. I picked up another a few months ago at Wally-Mart (probably during an overnight stay there) for less than $15. Now all is right with the world. The audio quality thru that cassette adapter in my old Windstar is vastly superior to the FM transmitter used in my RT and even the direct ipod connection in my Toyota.
