I want to purchase a small Outdoor Life fire-pit for the upcoming summer season. I would like to use an 11 pound propane tank with it, instead of a 20 pound tank, as it will be easier to store. I get conflicting statements as to whether this will work. Some knowledgeable people say the pressure is the same, therefore it is fine to do this. Obviously burn time will be reduced. Others are saying you must use a 20 pound tank because that is what the manufacturer says you must use.
Any informed input would be greatly appreciated.

As long as liquid remains in the tank, the pressure will be the same with any size tank, depending on temperature. At any temperature you are likely to encounter using it, the pressure regulator supplied with your device will be able to regulate down to the appropriate pressure (usually 11-13 inches water column).

Thanks Johnny. This is what I've been told by other 'propane' people. Your answer implies greater knowledge than many people who give their opinion. I don't know why the manufacturers say that you must use a 20 pound tank.

I have a small fire pit and both 20 lb and 11 lb tanks. There is no performance difference. That said, fire pits go through a surprising amount of propane and while I like carrying the smaller tank, I hate having to fill it up after just a few hours of use.

Refilling is certainly something to consider. Can you give an approximate number of hours of use on an 11 pound tank? I'm thinking it might be about 4-5 hours. We'd get through two nights, at least, if that was the case.

I have a 5lb bottle that fits in the under belly storage of my Roadtrek. It’s good for 3-4 evenings with my Lavabox ammo can styled fire pit, and a few outdoor meals on my Coleman stove.

Thanks. All responses are similar- a smaller tank than what manufacturer recommends are fine. Your answer is most helpful as it gives an idea as to how long a smaller, 11 or 5lb , tank would last. Your locale is similar to ours, so evening use likely would be similar.

I also use a 5 lb bottle with our smaller fire pit. It was made to utilize 1 lb disposal bottles. Bought a hose compatible to a 5 lg bottle which we already owned.
