Try dropping the generator down and installing foam board insulation in the generator cavity. You might also want to try some Automotive Acoustic insulation such as FATMAT available at Amazon.

Take it to Autozone, they check your codes for free and tell you what is indicated i.e. 0xygen Sensor, Mass Air Sensor, Vacuum leak etc..

If you are looking for the vehicle service manuals, you can find them on Amazon. Look for 1995 VW Eurovan Repair Manuals. Cost about $132.00. I belive the publisher is Bentley.
