Is your generator loud?

Try dropping the generator down and installing foam board insulation in the generator cavity. You might also want to try some Automotive Acoustic insulation such as FATMAT available at Amazon.

Most of the VW reliability issues are becuase of poor maintenance. Before purchasing, I would ask the owner if they have maintenance records, chances are if they don't, they've not been doing good...

Take it to Autozone, they check your codes for free and tell you what is indicated i.e. 0xygen Sensor, Mass Air Sensor, Vacuum leak etc..
