Mike,
I have a not-too-fancy Magellan. There's a menu option for POI Settings, which allows me to turn on or off various categories. If you are getting the builtin POIs but not the ones you've loaded, you might check into category selection. Mine also tends to show very few points until I have zoomed in to almost street level detail.

"My wife just threatens it, and it works fine for her." Yeah, well...

After listening to that flat nasal voice for a while, we turned off the sound. Better models allow you to download voices, so you could have Kermit the Frog giving you directions. Mr. T is also a possibility: Turn here, fool!

Dan

I think I have the POI categories set OK, but I could "allow all" and see if that does anything.
The problem is I can't tell the difference between the 6+ million preloaded and the ones I've added.
There is probably a significant amount of overlap. I'll just wait and see, maybe "turn on all" for fun.
Do you then have to talk like a green frog or Mr. T for it to listen to you? "I pity the fool, ribbit"

I've got the thing working and telling me about things as I approach.
Now I have to figure out how to shut it up. I tried touching the alert
window on the screen but it seems to just go on telling me "Starbucks
ahead, Starbucks ahead".
Anyone know if there's a way to acknowledge an alert, to get it to
stop talking? I guess we could disable the voice and just watch for the
proximity alert popups, but that sort of defeats the purpose of text to
speech.
It's a learning curve and I'm at out of the loop.....

"it seems to just go on telling me "Starbucks ahead, Starbucks ahead". "

One thing you might try is avoiding parts of town where there are Starbucks on each corner.

Failing that, here's an http://www.gps-data-team.com/ all-purpose GPS support site you could try.

Whatever did we do before we had all these labor-saving devices?

It's not seeing multiple Starbucks, it just won't shut up about the one it found.
Like a cat with a mouse at your back door.

I've seen that site before. Maybe I'll have a look.
I think I'll just shorten the trigger distance next time I build the POI file.
Thanks anyway.

We had nice, quiet, uneventful trips, and wondered if there was a Starbucks anywhere nearby.
