The boat trailer behind a pickup with a 5er are pretty common in Minnesota, and have always seemed to be a bit much for my liking. That said, I haven't heard of any accidents with them or complaints. I think they are limited to 5ers and aren't legal with a bumper full, as I have never seen that setup on the road.

In the case of the original pic, my first concern was the wind resistance force due to the bottom of the boat position. It looks like it would be quite a sail and trying to lift the front of the truck, which is not something you want when you have a trailer on.

The on/off was pretty scary. They have a set of purchases drive on ramps, that hook on the tailgate, and then a bunch of loose small ramps to connect the upper mounted frame to the ramp and then another set from the drive on ramp to the ground because the angle is too much with drive ons and the rear of the trailer hits the ground. When they were putting it back on, the winch or something, got stuck with the wheels halfway up the last, steep, add on, narrow ramps. The wife and teenage girl were behind the trailer "holding" it in case it released. Of course it was above shoulder height and would have run over them if it had.

The only thing that holds it to the truck were two ratchet straps around the trailer axle, and another around the tongue of the trailer just behind the cab. No strap or hold down from the front of the boat or trailer to the front bumper, so all the area of the boat and trailer from the back of the cab forward has no retention, putting quite a lever action on the single strap behind the cab.

We Class-B folks think a wee bit differently with regards to towing everything we own. Personally, I respect anyone who can back up with all of that stuff in tow!
