Default Buying a used RV in Arizona from Out of State

My friend is looking to buy a used RV from a Dealership in Arizona. He lives in Michigan where it will be registered. The dealership wants him to pay sales tax there which includes Local and City taxes. Told he will also had to have title transferred down in Arizona. When he gets back to Michigan he will have to have it transferred again. As for the tax they said they will collect it and send it to Michigan as their tax is lower and he will only have to pay the difference. All together $5000 on a $55000 deal. I'm afraid when he gets to MI he will have to pay again. So I called the AZ DMV and they said all he needs is a drive off permit which is $15 for 30 days and can pay the taxes when registered in MI. As anyone done any buying from a dealership in AZ from out of state. Smells fishy to me.

This is a constant complaint that out of state purchasers in AZ have to pay the sales tax in AZ. It is likely higher than in MI. I have many times purchased vehicles outside my state. Both MN and ND give credit for any sales tax paid elsewhere, I would assume that MI is the same. You have to pay any difference, but you won't be refunded if the other state is higher. He can try to push for what the AZ DMV told you... might help to provide the name of the person there.

He will probably still need that drive-out permit.

In 2015 I bought an RT 210 from a private seller in AZ. After talking with folks at the DMV in AZ and UT I got the transit permit and paid UT the state tax when I registered it in UT.

Deano, AZ does not tax private party vehicle sales ( vans, cars, motorcyles etc.) no matter the value.

as to a dealer sale out of state I have no idea.

I deal with private parties which is a 9% saving right there

The Michigan buyer will need a notarized change of title in AZ when they buy it-

( that absolves the seller from any liability - IF you sell a vehicle make sure the Sate knows you no longer own, control or have interest in it)

The safest way is to do this at the MVD ( motor vehicle division) where any title issues such as lien, salvage or forgery will pop up on the computer.

With their AZ title they can get a trip permit to cover the drive home, they will need proof of insurance.
This can be done online or at MVD

as for the sales taxes collected by a dealer, I have no idea.

but a michigan owner moving his owned vehicle from AZ to MI shouldn't have to pay any taxes to michigan

suppose it's cost of doing business if they want this RV that badly.
