The Sprinter automatic transmissions require a fluid change every 40,000 miles. They may have been longer in older models but were updated by Mercedes vans.

The multiple drain & refill method can be a recommended OEM procedure depending on make & model.
It is a described method for my '09 Escape. There's a note to do it 3 times to clean the torque converter.
